‘Apotekeren/ l’Apothicaire’, c1730
Description
Mounted black and white etching, entitled ‘Apotekeren / l’Apothicaire’, designed by Jacques Antoine Arlaud, etched by ‘S’ and published by ‘C’, around 1730.
This caricature depicts a young, thin and bespectacled apothecary. He is shown kneeling in profile to the right, his eyes staring, and lips pursed as he prepares to apply a huge clyster to an unseen lady – only her discarded shoe is visible next to a steaming jug. His wig has fallen back on his head and his cocked hat lies on the floor.
