Description

Mounted coloured lithograph, entitled ‘Apothicaire’, designed by Henri Monnier, lithographed by Francois-Seraphin Delpech, and published by anon in 1824.

Plate 3; interior of a drugstore. ‘Apothicaire’ provides an excellent depiction of the interior of a busy apothecary of the early 1800s. A man and girl are shown waiting, while the assistant standing behind the counter copies out a prescription.

In the corner another assistant is shown working, while a female assistant (possibly the apothecary’s wife) stands behind the counter. To the right, four gentlemen pass the time in front of a showcase of drug jars. An iron mortar on a stand by the counter is a prominent feature.
