Armenian Bole Pastilles, c1876
Description
Box with glass-panelled lid and paper label, containing four stamped pastilles from Baghdad.
Probably made of Armenian bole, which was used powdered in cases of ascites.
Pomet says that Armenian bole ‘is very drying and astringent, good against Fluxes and Gleets. It thickens thin Humours, resists Putrefaction, and expels poisonous Bodies. It is likewise us’d in spitting of Blood, bleeding Wounds; and also to consolidate broken Bones, [and] strengthen weak Limbs.’
