Clarke’s Sassafras Oil Pomade c1900-1930

Packet of Clarke’s Sassafras Oil Pomade, unopened, with original paper wrapper. The label states that the pomade; ‘Effectually cleanses the head from vermin and nits’. Sassafras oil is a volatile oil distillled from the root or root bark of Sassafras alkbidum (Lauraceae). It contains safrole. Sassafras oil has rubefacient properties and was formerly used as a pediculicide. The use of safrole in toilet preparations is now controlled.
