Description

English bell-metal mortar, manufactured by John Conyers of New Malton, Yorkshire in 1619.
A band around the mortar rim is inscribed with the initials ‘IC’, ‘REIOYSE IN IESVS CRIST’ (REJOICE IN JESUS CHRIST) in a bold Roman style with the letter ‘N’ reversed, and the year ‘1619’. The initials ‘IC’ are the foundry mark of John Conyers.
Around the mortar waist is a band of lively scrolling foliate decoration incorporating female torsos.
