Description
English Wedgwood ‘biscuit ware’ composition mortar, with pestle, undated
When Josiah Wedgwood developed a new ‘biscuit ware’ porcelain in 1779, it largely took over from bell metal mortars. Biscuit ware had the advantage above other materials in that it would not contaminate the ingredients ground in the mortar.
