Description

Mounted etching, entitled ‘From Warwick Lane.’, designed by Philip James de Loutherbourg, etched by Anthony Torre, and published by R. Sayer and J. Bennett in 1776.

This version is a re-issue by the printer Sayer of a satirical portrait produced by Torre. It shows a bizarre figure in profile, said to be a caricature of “a well known M.D. (Doctor of Medicine), one of the last remaining of the old school”.

He is shown as a very thin man wearing an excessively tight yet very old-fashioned full-skirted frock coat and a huge wig that conceals much of his cocked hat and face – around which buzz five flies. He carries a silver topped cane in his right hand, his left hand in his pocket and wears a dress sword.
