Description
Mounted lithograph, entitled ‘FRONTISPIECE TO THE “DOCTOR”, THE LANCET; MEDICAL GAZETTE; GAZETTE OF HEALTH; & c’, designed and lithographed by Charles Jameson Grant, and published by J. Kendrick in 1833.
A series of 25 humorous vignettes, comprising a series of visual and verbal puns. The central scene is titled “The Stomach Complaint!” and is a satire on the general view of the efficacy of medicines. In it a druggist sits writhing, with his legs drawn up, and grasping his stomach in agony, his face is wryly contorted with pain.
The druggist pleads to a surprised, bespectacled, and very old fashioned doctor; “Oh Doctor Doctor give me aid!, My Brain’s on fire, my bowls ache. In making up some Patient’s Pills, I took a couple by Mistake!!”.
The smaller scenes are titled; “A Burning Inflamation”, “A Galloping Consumption”, “The Dropsy”, “The Scarlet Fever”, “The Cramp”, “The Gripes”, “Miss carrying”, “The Small Pox”, Shortness of Memory!!”, “The Scurvy”, “The Hooping Cough”.
