Black and white photograph showing the exterior of John Bell and Company’s front shop, at 338 Oxford Street, London, dated about 1870. John Bell’s pharmacy, established in 1798, was not altered externally after the front was completely rebuilt in 1806. In most other pharmacies alterations of this kind were in turn succeeded by larger plate-glass windows in order to maximise the attraction of the window display. The area of glass ran from ground to ceiling.
