Mackay was a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain from 1841-1881, he was on the Board of Examiners in Scotland from 1852-1881, and was Secretary to the Board of Examiners in Scotland from 1871-1881. Mackay was a member of the Society Council in 1861-1881 and was Honorary Secretary of the North British Branch 1841-1881.
