Description

Mounted coloured lithograph, entitled ‘NOTIONS OF THE AGREEABLE No 21.’, designed and lithographed by anon, printed by William Kohler and published by William Spooner, circa 1830-1840.

An apprentice, wearing an apron over his livery, stands pounding a large iron mortar on a wooden block. He addresses the fashionable druggist who stands behind the counter pouring from a shop round into a medicine bottle. Lettered below design: “Please Sir I don’t think Mister Foozle takes his Fissick regler” / “No ! Why ? __” / “Cos he’s getting vell so precious fast”.

On the counter are bottles, a drawer from the drug run, shop rounds and a marble mortar. The walls are lined with drug runs and shelves for shop rounds and drug jars. The scene is a careful depiction of work in a contemporary pharmacy or apothecary’s shop.
