Poison Shop Rounds, late 1800s
Description
Shop rounds used in the pharmacy for storing medicinal poisons had particular design features to make them stand out from regular medicine shop rounds.
Although green was the most usual colour for pharmacy bottles in the 1800s, the ribbing on these shop rounds, rather than the colour of the glass, show that the bottles contained poisonous substances.
The red contents labels and the word poison after the name of the preparation served as an additional warning.
Fact
These poison shop rounds are from a set that was used at Allen and Hanbury’s Vere Street Pharmacy in London.
