Mounted hand coloured etching, entitled ‘Scientific Researches! _ New Discoveries in PNEUMATICKS! _ or _ an Experimental Lecture on the Powers of Air. ___’, designed and etched by James Gillray and published by Hannah Humphrey in 1802.
This is a satirical take on the fashionable public lectures and scientific demonstrations at the “ROYAL INSTITUTION”. The Royal Institution was founded in March 1799 with the aim of introducing new technologies and teaching science to the general public.
This scientific demonstration shows the unfortunate effect of the gas from the pneumatic pump on Sir J.C. Hippisley (1748-1825), whose breeches are almost torn off by the blast. T. Young, the lecturer in chemistry demonstrates, assisted by Humphrey Davy (1778-1829). On the demonstration bench, is a clyster bag, and carboys labelled “OXYGEN” and “HYDROGEN”.
