Description

Mounted hand coloured etching entitled ‘THE MACARONI. APOTHECARY’, designed and etched by anon, and published by Matthew Darly in 1772.

A macaroni was a disparaging term used for a follower of exaggerated continental fashion in the mid to late 1700s. This caricature features a full-length individual portrait of a figure with a long queue and small cocked hat, adopting an exaggerated swaggering pose, with his arms behind his back, inside his long voluminous coat.
