‘Very Slippy – Weather’, 1808
Description
Mounted hand coloured etching, entitled ‘VERY SLIPPY – WEATHER’, designed and etched by James Gillray, and published by H. Humphrey in 1808.
A man falls heavily on pavement outside “HUMPHREY No 27”, the publisher’s shop. He holds a barometer, presumably set for a fall, his wig and hat fall off, coins spill from his pocket, and his snuff box falls open.
Four men and an urchin, with skates under his arm, look in the bow window of the shop at the numerous Gillray prints displayed there, including along the top row: ‘Taking PHYSIC’, ‘Gentle EMETIC’, ‘Brisk – CATHARTIC’, ‘Breathing a vein’ and ‘Charming – well again’.
